Tip: Renting a Car

While public transport in Perth is relatively efficient, it does not allow flexibility of unplanned / multiple,  point-to-point stops and after hours or non-peak travel (less frequency - more waiting time).

Renting a car is definitely worth it especially if you have 3 or more pax in your party as inter-zone travel will cost a minimum of $8 per pax (per 2 hour limit/trip). See transperth.com.au

Unless you are visiting Perth City attractions (can cover using Free CAT bus or same zone bus), you would be better off renting a car.

Car rental rate can start from as low as $21 per day. In comparison, taking a one way UBER from T1 airport to the city could cost a minimum of $27 (off peak).

Some tips on renting car:

Book ahead especially if you are visiting during peak season especially local school holidays.

For peace of mind, opt for full cover insurance (no / reduced excess) or take up travel insurance that covers car rental (check conditions / exclusions).

Rates will depend on planned coverage eg unlimited mileage or city use or designated region / radius. Plan your rental according to your itinerary.

Charges are typically on a 24 hour rental basis. Enquire for partial daily or hours rate.

For convenience, opt for companies that offer airport pickup or transfer/dropoff. After hours pick up rate may also apply.

Major rental companies like Hertz / Avis / Budget have a counter at the airport. However, they may cost more.

If your travel group is more than 5 pax, you will need a people mover / MPV (up to 12 pax including driver - Toyota commuter). If you have 2 drivers or more in your group, it would probably be cheaper to rent 2 small cars.

Lookout for offers and discount code. For example, Hertz sometimes run offers for Enrich customers.

Malaysian driving licence is accepted in Perth (new version type - DRIVING LICENCE indicated)

There is no Toll in Perth! However, parking in the city can be costly. Look for accommodation with parking facility or factor parking cost/ arrangement.

When returning your car, fill up your petrol full or extra fee apply. At the airport, the closest station is at Caltex 961 Abernethy Road (just off the round about nearest to Terminal 1).

BEWARE OF HIDDEN COST

1. Unfortunately, many rental companies would quote a cheap rental rate but upon collecting your car would quote a very high insurance rate especially when you opt for zero / low excess. Also cover may include many exclusions / conditions.

2. Scam by claiming / accusing renter causing scratch or dent. Also charging excessive repair charges.

Check the car condition i.e. dents and scratches. For record, you may want to take a video of the exterior of the car.

3. Telling you the car you booked is not available and ask you to upgrade at higher cost.
